Dave Farabee said something the other night that made me think about our personal lists of movies we ought to watch. So I thought Id ask: Whats everyones I wish everyone had seen this one movie? Maybe its a guilty pleasure movie. If so, why does it charm you? Maybe its that art film that genuinely struck you. Id like to see how many in common Ive seen, and bump the others up in my viewing queue. mine: The Color of Pomegranates https://youtube/watch?v=7Mnc10CCXEs and Hudson Hawk Color of Pomegranates was a film I saw in art school, alongside a ton of other long and tedious movies. Something about Pomegranates struck me. The lyrical pace, the theatrical practical effects, the weird imagery that felt both strangely threatening and creepy (perhaps because of some similar design work in The Cell, which came out the year I first saw this) and also peaceful and beautiful. The film quality and strange pace reminds me of old movies running on weekday afternoons in the early 80s. It makes less sense than your average Terance Malick film, but its a movie that evoked a feeling in me I havent ever forgotten. Im not sure it matters if you sit through the entire thing, just long enough at least to slow down to the speed of it and watch it like a church ritual. Id smile if I could assume everyone on earth had seen these images and thought about the memories and associations it evokes. Hudson Hawk is the best example I have seen of a movie where everyone involved is having a ball, damn near to the point of nonsense. Its a heist picture with insanely implausible devices, a massive conspiracy plotline, Bruce Willis being himself while everyone else packs as much screwball as possible into a couple of hours. I dunno. It just worked for me. Im generally in the minority with that opinion, but - alongside possibly Joe vs the Volcano, Brain Donors and Stiff Upper Lips - its always at the top of my have you seen this? list.
