David Cameron and others have this week been telling Scotland not to go independent. All that oil is not the thing they fear losing. It is, implied, they have not come out and said it in so many words, but they have implied that the Scots really cannot go it alone because they really have not got the gumption. This is true. I thought about what Scotland has given to the World and after five minutes all I could think of was… Penicillin and anti-biotics, the Steam Engine, Brunel, Whisky, Sherlock Holmes, Charles Lyell the man who discovered The Earth was actually billions of years old. Television, Bill Forsyth and Billy Connolly, Robert Louis Stevenson, anaesthetics and someone called James Clerk Maxwell. All he ever did was discover the Laws of Thermodynamics, the only constant in the field of physics without which we would not have any computers, internet, radio, radar, internal combustion engines, or any technology. Mind you, if I’d spend a couple of more minutes I might have found something Scotland had given to the World.
