David Churchill, 52, has been sentenced to a total of 17 years for an extremely violent attack on his wife which culminated with Churchill setting fire to their family home. Brave June Churchill was held captive for three days and suffered a catalogue of serious injuries, including her estranged husband tying her by her wrists and ankles and gagged her, before hitting her in the chest and head with an axe, leaving gaping wounds. He also cut her neck and back with a rusty Stanley blade. Former Walton florist June Churchill, who described the ordeal as “being like a horror film” was treated for a fractured skull, broken spine and multiple stab injuries. Judge Mark Brown said: “In setting fire to the house you were acting out of spite and maliciousness towards your wife. “You can properly be described as a controlling, spiteful and violent bully.
