David Jacobson is not the problem – it is the system. The horses are clearly not protected in our national racing system (most especially the claiming horses). Last spring, Bladerunners volunteers spent countless hours writing letters, making phone calls, sending faxes and emails urging state and federal politicians, racing commissions and many of the top industry stakeholders to bring serious changes to horse racing. Bladerunners’ efforts led to the Jockey Club creating a website that challenged industry owners and trainers to publicly declare their support for open disclosure of medication records. Sadly nothing resulted from this campaign. Change is only possible when people act; and unfortunately not enough people chose to act to keep up the necessary pressure to make the changes happen. It is not enough to just post on Facebook and click “Like”.
