David Luiz is set for a move to Paris Saint-Germain after both clubs confirmed that a deal has been agreed for the transfer of the player, it is understood that the fee is in the region of £50 million. The general consensus is that it’s a great price for the Brazilian – and I would argue that the figure is more than he is worth – but it’s only a good sale if the 27-year-old is replaced with absolute quality. Chelsea aren’t really in need of another central defender at present, although a certain Raphael Varane would be an interesting addition if the Blues could convince Real Madrid to part with him, but are in desperate need of a central midfielder and a forward or two. The need for a striker is an obvious issue, well publicised and it’s hard to believe that it has taken this long before the problem is rectified but with Luiz, who mostly occupied a midfield role of late, leaving there is a dearth of suitable talent to partner Nemanja Matic in midfield – especially considering Ramires’ drop in form and Frank Lampard no longer has the legs for the battle in the middle of the park. If Mourinho intends to keep the promises he made about the desire to win trophies by playing attacking football then we need a top player in this position, like Arturo Vidal, Paul Pogba, Koke, Luka Modric, Cesc Fabregas, Bastian Schweinsteiger etc. As much as Chelsea need a forward to put chances away they need to be made and the movement from back to front was far too pedestrian last season and, ironically enough, Mourinho’s side looked clueless against the teams that ‘parked the bus’. I’ve not always been particularly keen on Luiz’s performances and his tendency to make daft errors, but I do believe he could have developed into a competent defender or midfielder under the right manager. His quality is evident and his character will be missed at Stamford Bridge. The fee Chelsea will get is great – but isn’t worth a thing if it is
