David Shearer fighting the good fight: Auckland Transport - TopicsExpress

David Shearer fighting the good fight: Auckland Transport continues to insist it will chop down the six mature Pohutukawa trees - emblems of our city. Ive been stunned at extraordinarily inflexible thinking from ATs engineers. I attended their liaison meeting last night. It seemed blindingly obvious that a compromise could happen to satisfy everyone. No. It had to be done their way and no other. I want to see why some of the alternatives wont work. If we can find room for 17 road lanes - yes 17! - surely we can find room for six trees with their beauty, history, shade and welcome relief from the acres of tarmac. I haven’t met anyone who’s impressed with Auckland Transport’s road design. If we can’t have both roads and trees, Auckland Transport needs a new engineering team. Let’s take a breath, combine some creative thinking and good design with an appreciation of the natural beauty of our city, and work together to avoid the Environment Court. - David Shearer
