David Weir expects Harry Bunn to challenge for a place in Sheffield United’s starting eleven after revealing he could explore the possibility of renewing the centre-forward’s loan from Manchester City. Weir threw down the gauntlet ahead of tomorrow’s visit to Carlisle, where winger Jamie Murphy could also return to action following injury. Bunn, initially signed on a short-term youth loan from Manchester City, made his first appearance since last September at Rotherham six days ago after recovering from a serious knee problem. Weir, hinting he could be tempted to extend the arrangement should it prove a success, said: “Yes, Harry should be pushing. He should be putting himself in contention.” United head to Brunton Park 19th in the table and without a League One win since the opening round of the season. Carlisle, who dispensed with the services of their manager Greg Abbott earlier this week, are 22nd having scored just once in their last five. The hosts placed Graham Kavanagh in caretaker charge following Abbott’s departure. United, who are also beset by problems in front of goal, will be missing the suspended Febian Brandy but Murphy could feature after overcoming a groin complaint. George Long (England) and Sean McGinty (Republic of Ireland) are available for selection after being called-up for the recent round of European Championship qualifiers. “Jamie has been managing the situation for a while,” Weir said. “But he started training again on Wednesday and did some light work so we’ll see how he reacts.”
