Davis nets three, England win at Roker. 1950 – Dickie Davis netted three times as Sunderland sealed a 6-1 win over Derby County in front of over 60,000 people at Roker Park. The striker made 144 appearances in total for the Black Cats, scoring 73 goals during a seven-year spell on Wearside between 1946 and 1953. Born in Birmingham in 1922, Davis made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Leeds United in December 1946, before finishing as the Football League First Division’s top scorer in the 1949-50 season with 25 goals. He left Sunderland in 1953 joining Darlington where he would go on to score 32 goals in 93 league appearances. 2008 – Billy Elliott, who made over 200 appearances for the Lads and filled in as caretaker manager on two occasions, passed away at the age of 82. 1996 – Shay Given kept the first of his 12 clean sheets during his 17-match loan spell from Blackburn Rovers. 1914 – England beat The North 4-3 at Roker Park in front of 20,000 people, with George Holley scoring England’s first goal.
