Davison Cup – Match report Monday 5th May As last years’ Hadrian League Champions, Hexham visited Tyneside ( N&D Champions 2014 ) for this opening 5 man match in the Davison Cup. If ever there was a challenging match, then this was it, and Tyneside decided to field a strong team. On a grey but otherwise mild afternoon, Kris Rae went out at No.1 against tough opponent Sean Heads, and they had a good tussle, each sharing a lead before Sean won 2&1. Sam Robinson, playing at No.2 was up against another young player who is in good form, but Sam putted brilliantly to win his match 3&2. Dan Beeson, at No.3 started off shakily, losing his first 3 holes, but then found his game, and came back strongly against Ian Richardson, winning his match 4&3. James Surtees at No.4 started off in a similar vein, losing the first 3 holes, and although he looked to close the gap, he eventually went down 4 &3. So here was the match poised at 2 games each, and everything resting on in-form Chris Burke to try and win it for Tyneside. He was having a great game against Richie Rutherford, and they were level after 12 holes. Chris won the 13th, Richie holed a monster at 14 to square it again and they halved the 15th. The turning point seemed to come at 16, when Chris fired in close enough for a “gimme” and Richie lipped out, so it was dormie2 to Tyneside. At the 17th, Richie struck his 2nd shot to within 8 feet, and Chris found the bunker from which he played out to about 4 feet. Richie missed his putt to make a 4, and Chris had to sink his putt to halve the hole and win the match for Tyneside. The man in form sunk his putt and Tyneside had won the match 3 games to 2.!! All the matches were played in a good spirit. Hexham were naturally disappointed but the Tynesiders were delighted and deserve great credit. Bring on the draw for the next round !!
