©Dawn L. Brown data-Cub observations 8-1-14 Early a.m. I didnt see the cubs, and they stayed pretty secluded all day.at 6:45 p.m. early evening ; I eventually spotted them after searching, and they were way up in a maple tree; they were foraging big time! I believe on maple keys ,leaves, but I wanted to review the video to be sure -so when I got in, I checked it out more thoroughly = It looks as though they were possibly foraging on maple keys, leaves + Beech leaves, and what little substance there is in the beechnuts this year that do exist; being that last year was the bumper crop=good beech trees produce abundant beechnut crops biannual = every other year ;though I have witnessed longer timeframes over the years; I am happy to say-that lately-they have been proving to be very abundant every other year in this geographical landscape within my pen, and surroundings... I also spotted the cubs foraging on ash leaves, and they too produce keys like the maple trees do. It is obvious that though they are in a maple tree ;they certainly have a selection of food sources = thus giving them access to: maple, ash, beech limbs that are prevalent in the video, and though they are in a maple tree they have access to a variety of other food sources + there is an oak tree producing acorns on the other side of the maple tree. Brave & Freedom are certainly using their natural instinctive repetitive foraging behavioral patterns = these foraging tactics and skill that they have in place = they simply know what to do - as have all the other cubs - I have observed over the years, and continue... I call them my smart little bears indeed!:o) Take Note: though I had put supplement out about 75 feet from them = 2 cups puppy chow + 2 apples ;the cubs had stayed in the tree = 6:45 p.m. I went out and found them - put supplements about 75 ft. away, and at :7:45 p.m. the cubs were still up in the maple tree. I am sure they will eventually come down and the supplements will disappear. I am just happy to say that my natural habitat pen is able to sustain their diet greatly , and too I gather natural food sources for the cubs. They sure are amazing - I never get tired from observing them :o) I have been thinking about some of my other bears from the past; that are now living in the wild, and sure hope they are faring well too...:o)
