Dawn Turner Trice once interviewed a guy who was gruff and surly, and although he might have appeared to be a thug, he wasnt. He was smart and insightful, particularly in the way he thought about young street toughs and their lack of values. He told me that hed seen a documentary on the National Geographic Channel about a band of African elephants that had begun to run wild and act uncharacteristically aggressive. Researchers figured out that the elephants had been abandoned by a herd and that without the instruction and direction of the older elephants -- without the socialization -- the youngsters seemed to lack an understanding of the proper way to behave. I think about this man every time Chicago has a particularly violent weekend and the question of values emerges. Where are the shooters values? Where are their parents values? Why hasnt the community stepped up? Its about, as Mayor Rahm Emanuel has said, whether you have values.
