Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) Starring: Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke & Keri Russell An apocalyptic vision of what would happen if humans were almost wiped out by a virus that largely left apes unaffected. Not just ordinary apes, but those that were exposed to high levels of an Alzheimer’s drug which left them with incredible intelligence and reasoning. The world that is conceptualized on this premise is harsh but not unrealistic. All primates here are so close in behavior, community structure and moral fiber that the tale is less about humans versus animals and more about the dangers of questionable character and power struggles. There is an incredible use of animation and makeup: you can hardly tell where live action stops and effects takes over. You are equally attached to humans, chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas and equally disgusted when bad character enforces violence and greed. Overall, a great movie which of course leaves us hanging for a sequel.
