Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – 7.4 out of 10 This was a very solid follow up to the ‘original’ reboot. It’s an entertaining sci-fi actioner that I think is worth the price of admission. The film contains some very impressive special FX and sequences that successfully paints the picture of a cold, rainy, and apocalyptic world. My gripes are few – 1. Gary Oldman feels wasted in this film. He’s a larger than life actor in my eyes, and while his performance was (and always is) on point, he was only in the movie for all of 10-15 minutes throughout. 2. And while the remaining cast put in decent performances, I did not buy into the legitimacy of lead actor’s performance (Jason Clarke). He basically plays a ‘Rick Grimes’ kind of character, and if you’re really going for that, just tap Andrew Lincoln and be done with it. 3. But my main gripe is the predictability of the movie. At no point in this film do you have to guess what happens, you just know. There were no twists, no turns, and nothing to keep the audience on it’s toes. Just a long, straight line to the end credits. Conclusion – I’d say that the movie is better than most that have come out in this year’s summer crop. While the actual story/characters were a bit bland and underwhelming, you cannot help but be impressed with the special FX work that had to go into this movie to bring all of it to life.
