Day 1: "What the protestors have been doing and how the government has responded to them are equally useless." said a cab driver this afternoon but then he immediately added: "I love Erdogan, there is nobody else who can rule the country so justly." I believe he feared that I would misunderstand his "minor" criticism of the government as "anti-Erdogan." When we passed by a cop who was holding an automatic machine gun in his hand and looked ready to attack, I asked the cab driver what he thinks about the police violence/brutality and he, instead of answering the question, told me that all the protestors have been getting paid to create chaos on the streets and destabilize "our wealthy, beautiful" country. When I asked whether he knew who was paying the protestors, he looked at me through the mirror with a grin on his face and said: "You know who..."
