Day 1: When we first arrived at Gate 3, Duke Forest looked so - TopicsExpress

Day 1: When we first arrived at Gate 3, Duke Forest looked so vast and beautiful. The trees were ranging from my height to my height multiplied by fifty, the leaves were cluttered on the ground mixing yellow with orange, and the sound of the frogs croaking woke me up from my tiredness. We met up with Sarah and Jud who were going to be our tour guides and teachers of the forest. Since the early 1930s, the Duke Forest, compromised of over 7,000 acres of land, was used for teaching and research purposes. Sarah informed us that researchers cut down trees except for specific types of trees that would disperse seeds on the land to promote new tree growth. Not only does the Duke Forest practice sustainability, but also it protects the environment and ecosystem that a variety of organisms inhabit. Overall, I learned that the mission of the Duke Forest is to facilitate research that addresses forested and aquatic ecosystems and to aid the awareness of the public.- Esther Lee
