Day 1 of 5. My darling brother, Andrew Metz nominated me to post one of my favorite songs for 5 days and nominate someone else each day. I like to call myself a latter-day Deadhead. I didnt really know or understand the Grateful Dead until many years after Jerrys death. I deeply appreciate all the folks who taped and archived so many shows and Jerrys generosity when it came to taping. I have a small tour family, whom I hope to see for a show or two in 2015 (Bobby willing...) and I have a pretty strong grasp on many of the hundreds of songs that Jerry and the boys played during their 30 years on the bus. There was a time when I didnt know more than one or two Grateful Dead songs, and at least one of them, I didnt know was theirs. A friend of mine lived with me in 2007 who was a tour kid in the 90s. She played some tapes for me (yes, they were cassettes) and this song was the first one to really win me over. It combines two of my favorite things: monkeys and trains. I love the idea that the monkey steals the train and manages to drive the thing. This awesome acoustic version is from the Melkweg in Amsterdam in 1981.
