Day 10 Luke 1:26-38 Gabriel the angel makes another visit and another announcement. This time it is met, not with doubt, but with curiosity and confusion. Mary, a young girl in her teens, cant quite grasp how she is going to get pregnant while still a virgin. Here you see God encouraging willing faith, even if it is immature. Gabriel tells Mary about Elizabeth, her cousin, and then caps it off with one of the most powerful statements in the Bible: Nothing is impossible with God. (vv.36-37) The focus, however, is on Marys virginity and the role of the Holy Spirit in the birth of the Savior. Because our sin nature is passed down generation after generation from the father, it is critical that the Savior not be the progeny of a human father and a human mother. With the Holy Spirit acting in place of a father (MYSTERY!), Jesus would necessarily be human and divine. Not half and half--fully human and fully divine. This is called the hypostatic union of Christ. Thus He could be the perfect and unblemished sacrifice to God while at the same time being the sacrifice for human sin; i.e. a human paying the penalty for a sinful humanity. This is amazing. Transcendent. Beyond our ability to grasp. And yet, it still makes perfect sense. If Jesus was not born of a virgin, then He could not be the Lamb of God. If he were not human, He would not be Immanuel. Oh, what a Savior!!
