Day 11. This has been one hell of a ride and a very easy story to tell. I think its been easy for me tell because I get to brag on my girl everyday. This is especially true today as many exiting things are happening with Lora. After she thrilled us all with her physical therapy session today; Lora was rewarded with some time away from these four walls that seem to be closing in on us. Weve had visitors the last couple days. Eldon and Charissa Huff came up Thursday and will be leaving this morning some time. It was a great visit. Sometimes you meet people you know right away are very special. This is for sure the case with these two. Eldon, in case you dont remember was the man that answered my call for help on the CB radio that started this remarkable road to recovery. We all went out on the town last night for a short break from the rehab center. Our first stop was the Dairy Queen. Yes, I know... Were wild things! Loras been craving ice cream so she got her wish. Shes been very disappointed in the way foods and drinks are tasting since she woke up from her coma. The ice-cream was another big disappointment. Many things like ice-cream and pop no longer taste good to Lora. Were not sure if the shift in taste is from medication theyre weaning her off or from the traumatic brain injury she suffered. Saturday will be another fun day. Were off to the Lincoln Zoo and then the Sunken Gardens. I plan on snapping a few photos today. I have been all along. I dont have a card reader for my nice camera so the only pics Ive posted have been snapped with my phone. I have been busy though as Ive took many photos of her incredibly successful journey. To show she can live on her own away from the rehab center, she is now expected to ask for her medication when it is needed. This is one of her first steps toward becoming independent. It also indicates our stay here may be shorter than we expected. In another move toward independence her alarm was removed from her wheelchair. They were also going to remove the bed alarm, but the nurse discovered the bed alarm had already been removed. Somehow the bed alarm had fell off and was found wadded up and tucked away in the framing of the bed. We were both in the room when this discovery was made and I got one of those looks. You know that look when someone thinks youve been a bad boy? Its that downward stare over the tops of their eye-glasses; thatd be the look I got. Believe me Ive seen that look before and know what its all about. I just grinned and she laughed out loud. Lora dazzled the hell out of us at PT with another day filled of personal bests. She started on a stepping machine that shes used before. This time the tension was increased 4X. Even with increased tension she did 700 steps in ten minutes. Last week she did 600 steps in eleven minutes with no tension. We were very impressed but learned very quickly she wasnt done impressing. After about a two-minute break Lora stood from the machine and walked from the therapy gym up an incline and all the way back to her room. This walk was over 400 feet! She wears a thick cotton belt that we use to hold onto to help keep her from falling. Her therapist helped some with balance, but Lora did most on her own. Her strength is returning at an unbelievable rate. She basically doubles what she did the previous day all the time. Like I said with so many days like this; Loras story is an easy one tell. Shes quite the success story, to say the least. Our date for departure was set a couple weeks ago at August 5, but Id be surprised if were here another weekend. Shes almost weaned off all her medication and can now walk to the gym almost on her own. She may need a cane for a short time when we leave here but I think the wheelchair will soon be no longer needed. Her mind is sharp, her legs are strong, vision is still a problem. It may take some time for this to correct itself. Weve been doing eye exercises and they are helping with smoothness of tracking. I think its easy to tell Im very proud of my girl. I know many of us are and I thank you for keeping us in your prayers. Loras favorite time of day is when I read my posts to her with all your encouraging comments. After the great day she had yesterday, Id like to ask you all to post some words of encouragement to her. I wont read this plea for encouragement to her. This will help boost her morale through a long boring weekend as she awaits Monday and more grueling rehab. Thanks again for all the support, and you all have a great weekend too!
