Day 13 of #turkeytalk Diseased and Drugged: The Modern Turkey Like all beings with wills to live freely and enjoy their lives, turkeys do not do well in confinement. They are subject to confinement on virtually all farms, even so-called “free-range”, “cage-free”, and “organic” farms. The result of cramming hundreds, sometimes thousands of birds in a crowded yard or barn is an array of health problems. Sitting and standing in filthy litter, breathing ammonia and dust, they develop blistered and diseased feet and breasts, burned eyes and respiratory diseases. To control the variety of diseases that develop in these harsh conditions, farmers may feed birds subtherapeutic levels of antibiotics or antimicrobials.
