Day 14 (That went fast!). Émilie Rigby asked me a real good question about yesterdays post. Is it Betula nigro or Betula lenta? I was like, hey its a black birch, what do you want from me? :) and lo and behold black birch is a sloppy all purpose name for a bunch of the darker birches people cant readily identify. Betula lenta is commonly called a cherry birch and the photos show a nice adolescent specimen near my home. The bark of older cherry birches starts to crack. (Kind of like us humans). That said, the Challenge has been a terrific way to start the new year. By stopping to observe closely the skin of the standing people in the middle of winter Ive created energetic ropes with apx two dozen trees. In the process my weak naturalist skills have improved and Ive become a deeper ecologist. I also really appreciate the group support and the interesting people I have met here. I look forward to a 3D gathering hopefully sometime this year. Thanks again Ricardo!
