Day 15....8 hours from home, my beautiful kids, my family that has been so amazing to love my kiddos these past two weeks and my sweet, sweet friends. Uhaul in tow with treasures that i can remember from as far back as i can remember and my husband by my side. Life is good! Saturday morning we met a lady at the estate sale named Jennifer. She was wanting to negotiate a price on the entertainment center in my grandparents den. She had some small things picked out as well, a vintage wooden mail holder that had a place to hang keys at the bottom, a few kitchen items, a set of pink floral sheets that i think my grandmother has owned for 35 years but were still softer and in better condition than anything i own, and some other knick knacks. I gave it all to her for $55. She was very friendly and so happy. She said she would need to come back for the entertainment cabinet because she needed to get her friend with a trailer to help. There was another table she was looking at but was running low on money, i told her when she came back to pick it up we would give it to her for half price if it was still there. My aunt and and i helped her to her car and we loaded her up. Her SUV was already loaded up with yardsale goodies. It was obvious she had a busy morning. She hugged us as if we were lifelong friends, gave us her phone number and said she would be back in a few hours to pick up the entertainment cabinet. She arrived about 12:30 with a friend and a flatbed trailer hooked up to her SUV. He and i loaded the big piece on the trailer and she purchased the other table. I went on with other people and my aunt walked her out. A few minutes later, my aunt walked in with that sweet look of compassion on her face, her head slightly tilted and her hand on her heart. She was fighting back tears and said, Shes got a story. Give me a minute Then Aunt Phyllis told us about Jennifer. She had been hit by a drunk driver 8 years ago. She was injured and had a long rehabilitation. She lost her job, couldnt find work and became homeless. She had floated around and lived with different people for the last 8 years! She got a steady job recently and on Friday, August 1 spent her first night in her own place!! As if the day was not emotional already, were crying again. Almost instantaneously, we started looking around and our eyes went to my grandmothers sofa...priced at $175 but for us it was priceless. Nothing special in value, around since the 1950s, its been recovered every couple of decades, but the stories it could tell. It was the formal living room sofa....the back drop for so many pictures at holidays, funerals, births, birthdays. We knew where it was going. My aunt called Jennifer and asked her what else she needed. She said she had bought a mattress and box springs earlier that morning and that she had a tv and was going to build up as she could find things at sales. Phyllis asked her if she could come back later in the day. When she showed up, we gave her many grandmothers sofa, the chair that went with it and my sisters computer desk. Cara T. Wood and I walked into the kitchen and asked her what she needed and told her to take it. She went to the containers jammed with spatulas, scrapers, cooking utensils and spoons. She took 3 simple items, we encouraged more, but she would only take what she needed. She was so grateful. She hugged us all. She told me how much she loved my Aunt Phyllis. She looked at me and said, i just love you. I just love your family. We say we love people all the time and its nothing but words. The tears in her eyes, the thank yous that spewed out a hundred times, the testimony from her coworker who loaned her the trailer about how hard working she is and the effort she has put into getting a place of her own.....that is a lady who has seen rough times and still finds love in all that is around her. Once again, we were blessed!!! Connie McCalman Thompson Cara T. Wood Christy McCalman
