Day 15 of the 2014 IIHF Mens World Championships is complete. Today was the final day and medals have been awarded. Here is what happened today in Minsk. The bronze medal game featured Sweden against the Czech Republic. Joakim Lindström got things started at 4:28 of the first period, scoring from Niclas Andersén and Oscar Moller. At 15:44, the Swedes extended their lead as Simon Hjalmarsson got his first of the tournament, with assists going to Mattias Ekholm and Nicklas Danielsson, to make it 2-0. There was no scoring in the second period but there were eight penalties between the two teams. At 8:22 of the third period, Mikael Backlund scored from Erik Gustafsson and Lindström to make it 3-0 for Sweden, which turned out to be the final score. Anders Nilsson made 29 saves for the shutout. Alexander Salák made 21 saves for the Czechs, whose best player was Jiří Novotný after winning fifteen faceoffs. The gold medal game featured Russia against Finland. Sergei Shirokov got things started at 10:45 of the first period with a powerplay goal, assisted by Danis Zaripov. With three seconds left in the first, Iiro Pakarinen tied the game 1-1 on a goal assisted by Jori Lehterä. The Finns took the lead at 6:51 of the second when Olli Palola scored from Pekka Jormakka and Lehterä. 43 seconds after that, the Russians tied the game 2-2 when Alexander Ovechkin scored on an assist from Vadim Shipachev. At 15:36, Russia took the lead on a powerplay goal by Evgeni Malkin, with Zaripov getting his second assist. In the final frame, Russia continued to flex their muscles on the man advantage. Zaripov scored a goal of his own at 4:24, with Shirokov getting the only assist. With 4:07 left in regulation, Viktor Tikhonov scored his tournament-best eighth goal, with assists going to Alexander Kutuzov and Nikolai Kulemin. Russia got 24 saves from Sergei Bobrovsky and Finland got 34 saves from Pekka Rinne. Directorate awards were given to Bobrovsky (best goaltender), the United States Seth Jones (best defenceman) and Tikhonov (best forward); the tournaments most valuable player award went to Rinne, making him the second Nashville Predators player in a row to win MVP.
