Day 16 - Mick Ronson ( 20 Days of Guitar) The first of Bowie I heard was Fashion from Scary Monsters( Robert Fripp - ex King Crimson on guitar). Robert Fripp was a head trip, his guitar work was discordant weird and beautifully perfect for those songs. Fripp is in a category all his own. Then I got Changes and heard the Mick Ronson . Micks feel was fantastic, he could layer stuff into the song to give it space. He hard great taste in the notes he chose and knew when to pull back and let the song take over. Its hard to describe how he does it differrent to others, but to my ears it just is. Huge chords that lift the songs..., it all just sounds great under Bowies voice. My favourite albums of Bowie had Mick on guitar . He played on The Man Who Sold the World (1970) Hunky Dory (1971) The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972) Aladdin Sane (1973) Pin Ups (1973) Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture (1983) Black Tie White Noise (1993) Bowie at the Beeb (2000) Live Santa Monica 72 If you know those albums you will know his playing. He also played with Mot the Hoople ( All the Young Dudes) and also Bob Dylans Hard Rain album.. His main guitar was a sandback 58 Les Paul. The hard part now is alot of guitarists get missed out, and not because theyre not great, its just there influence on me wasnt as strong.. ie Brian May ( Queen), Eric Clapton ( Cream) - I preferred to listen to Jack Bruce. Leslie West ( Mountain), Duane Allman ( Allman Brothers) although a genius slide player with immense talent, he didnt hit me like others did. I never slaved over the albums listening to every detail , slowing the record down.... trying to find the accidental noise that I could hear and couldnt find on the fret board.
