Day 16 - November 21, 2014 Been up since 4AM so Im ready to turn in but I have to share some answered prayers: 1) No fever today and no Tylenol either; 2) David was more awake and responded to several commands. When nurse couldnt get him to wiggle a finger or toes, she told him to stick out his tongue and he did! As he was becoming less sedated, he began coughing violently and turning red in the face. I suspected that, in his semi-sedated state, he sensed something caught in his throat and he was trying to cough it up. I began talking to him and explaining that he has a tube to help him breathe and that if he fights it, they will knock him out again. I told him that he needs to stay awake so he can sit up and get better and then they will take the tube out. He immediately quit coughing and was calm the rest of today. Later,I told him I was leaving the room and would be right back. When I came back to bedside, held his hand and told him Im back, he smiled! Best. Early. Christmas. Present! Praise to God is in order!!! Specific prayer requests: 1) dr. says his chest x-rays are all over the place. He will show some improvement and then x-ray will show worsening. Some of the trach/ventilator secretions drip down into his lungs. Infectious disease dr. says he needs to get off the vent which puts him at increased risk for pneumonia, BUT his lungs are not strong enough to breathe without the vent so we are in something of a Catch 22. Please pray for any infection and/or fluid in his lungs to clear; 2) pray for increased awakeness & awareness so that he can begin to sit up and take deeper breaths. This will facilitate weaning him from the vent; 3) social worker came in to talk to me about Long Term Acute Care facility for whenever he is well enough to transition. I will tour the 2 places that are on this side of town. Please pray for me to have wisdom and discernment in making that decision; 4) pray for sustained improvement so that he keeps moving forward.
