Day #16: I am thankful for the ability to cook. And the person most responsible for this is my mother. I remember as a little kid, when the womens lib movement really began to take off, my mother and father would fight quite a bit about how she was expected to cook, clean, do laundry, raise the kids, AND keep a 40 hour a week job. I remember my mother making the very conscious decision to raise her sons to be able to take care of themselves, and that began with teaching me how to cook. I was a willing and eager student because the alchemy of cooking had always fascinated me. Taking inedible ingredients like flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, oil, eggs, mix them together, put them in an oven for 30 minutes and you get CAKE! Magical wondrous alchemy. My ability to cook has served me well, i have made over 3 dozen wedding cakes, catered fundraisers and parties, thrown some fabulous dinner parties and started a cooking blog! More than that, it has taught me an appreciation for the art that is cuisine. How something as simple as a grilled cheese sandwich can be elevated to something miraculous by choosing the best ingredients and playing with flavors. I am thankful to my mother for introducing me to this mystical art form, and I am thankful that in turn, I have passed this to my own children, who are wonderful cooks in their own right.
