Day 173: My paternal grandmother was the best. She was a storybook grandmother. We called her Gramps. She was a seamstress, an excellent cook and baker. Gramps allowed me to help her cook…I got to stir and I thought I was cooking! I still love to stir – not cook, just stir. I would find dresses in the Sears and Spiegel’s catalogs and Gramps would purchase the same fabric and make the item for me. I had Keds, black and white saddle oxfords and black patent leather shoes to go with my outfits. I loved loved wearing dresses. Before my grandmother passed away, she told my grandfather to make sure I got her sewing machine. The joke in the family was: why would Gramps leave me her machine since I was the only one in my family who could not sew. I saw no need to rush over to pick up the machine but Pops kept asking me to get it and I finally did. On day, I bought a pattern and some fabric and started sewing. Gramps would be so proud of me because I learned to sew…I taught myself. Grateful that my grandmother asked Pops to make sure I got the machine. On my own, I never would have purchased a sewing machine which means I never would have learned to sew. Gramps believed in me. Grandmothers are so awesome.
