Day 2 - Zomba, Malawi. More rain. Went on our first field trip and saw the flooding in one district first hand. The District Administrator reports that 800 households are in need of help. Either they have been flooded,or their houses, made out of farm bricks, have collapsed. All 800 households are being housed in schools, churches etc., until they can rebuild. Think about this - why do we get excess flooding in cases like this? Answer - we have created bare soil through our activities as man. Excessive land preparation, overgrazing, deforestation, roads etc. In a country like Malawi, when the vegetation and animals are in perfect balance, with no interference by man, you do not find bare soil. The soil is clothed by God with vegetation and a thick layer of mulch (dead plant material). Under these conditions you do not get excessive run off. The water percolates into the soil. If it does run off, it pure clean water, without soil particles. That is where we need to get back to. Even our agriculture must NEVER leave the soil bare, only to bleed red top-soil when it rains.
