Day 2 Devotion: Read Matthew 5:33-37. A major theme in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount was correcting the manmade laws and recalibrating them with God’s divine intent. Like He did with the issues of murder, impurity, and divorce, Jesus confronted the issue of half truths and empty promises. Oaths designed to encourage truthfulness and reliability had become occasions for clever lies and casuistical deceit. God’s desire is that we exhibit thorough and consistent truthfulness. Our lives should be saturated with this standard of honesty and truth to the point that we need not use hierarchical oaths to substantiate the reliability of our actions. Rather, as a lover of Jesus who is the Truth, we live so committed to truth that our yes means yes and out no means no. Remember, we belong to Him and have no right to swear on Him this order were reversed. Live in truth and be honest always remembering that the Lord has all authority!
