Day 2 in the hospital: 8/8/93- Ollie, Kay, and Kendra came up around 1:30 p.m. and brought Brian (my brother) with them. (Too many people to mention called to check on me). Gena, Eric, and little Eric came to see Steph. At 5:30 Louisville time, Steph was going to surgery. She has a blood clot and a crushed vertebra that has to be repaired. C-4 in the neck is broken and T-9 in the back causing her paralysis. The blood clot is behind the T-9 and spinal cord causing pressure on her spine. They are going to remove the blood clot, take out the crushed vertebra, take a bone from her hip, replace the vertebra, and put two sleel rods in her in her back to stabalize her back. Stephanie told the nurse in Madisonville that she moved a ditch with her head. (I did fly out of the car and land in a ditch with water in it). She also told her nurse before surgery that she remembered that Lyndsey and Danny didnt make it. Dr. came out at 8:50 p.m. and told us that the blood clot had been removed and she was doing good. They are fusing the bone now and it will be another 1 1/2 hrs for the next surgery. 10:20 p.m.- They told us Stephy was out of surgery. They had to give her 1 1/2 units of blood as she had lost quite a bit through the femur and the arm, and her arm would be set in a couple days. They have a collar on her neck- said the c-4 fracture should fuse together itself in about 6 weeks. 11:30 p.m. they told us Steph was going to ICU. They gave her 2 units of plasma and 1 unit of blood before surgery. 11:45 p.m. nurse came out and said shes breathing on her own and will be up to ICU soon. They have been giving her Demorol and steroids today for the pain and the swelling in her spine.
