Day 2 of the June Age Group at Buena meet saw several Canyons swimmers earning their way to the next level of competition by turning in outstanding swims. Leading the pack was Nikol Popov with a 1:02.05 in the 100 fly, which earned the 14 year old her second Junior National cut in as many days. In fact, her time was so impressive she nearly earned a US Open time, coming up just .06 short on that quest. Nikol did come away with a Canyons age group record, surpassing KT Livingstone’s 2007 time of 1:04.42. The Canyons sectional team continued to grow as several swimmers earned cuts for next month’s big show. Leading the way was Alexa Skorus-Neely who picked up her second and third sectional cuts this week, today in the 200 breaststroke and the other in the 100 fly. Brooke Helgson earned her Sectional jacket in the 400 free as did Cameron Helm. For the boys, Johnny Ellery made the cut in the 400 free as did Brian Buxton in the 100 fly. Overall several swimmers earned their way to finals or top 8 finishes. The 10 & under crew performed great. The 200 free saw Kean Alejandro, Jedric Minano and Kale Alejandro finish 2, 3 and 8th respectively. Ryan Sevidal earned 4th in the 100 back. In the 100 breaststroke Julia Unas was 4th for the girls and Alejandro Kean took 1st for the boys with brother Kale in 3rd and Ke Karunaratne in 8th. In the 50 fly Jedric Minano raced to a silver medal swim, followed by Kevin Nguyen in 6th . The 11-12 year old earned their share of the hardware off great swims. Tiana Tran earned 5th in the 11-12 100 back for the girls and Justin Morsch took 7th for the boys. In the 100 breaststroke, Tran finish 8th for the girls and Joshua Lee 7th for the boys. Johnny Quick struck gold in the 50 fly for the boys and Kiana Tran finish 6th for the girls. A highlight swimmer for the age group was Brooke Helgeson who won the 400 free as she cruised to a win with her 4:37.26 swim, which was just 3 seconds off Brett Shiflett’s 1999 club record. Hope Hill was 4th. The boys 400 saw Noah Brune in 3rd overall with Jon Quick in 4th, Justin Morsch in 6th and Cade Brower in 8th. Other evening finals saw Alexa Skorus-Neely winning the 11-14 200 breaststroke with Cameron Helm in 3rd and Hailey Chua in 7th. For the 11-14 boys, Tanner Olson took 5th. The 13 and Older 100 fly was led by Popov who finished 2nd in her team age gorup record swim. Zander Minano finished 4th in the 13-14 division. The 400 free saw Popov take a shot at Abbey Weitzeil’s 400 free club record of 4:27.28 with her 4:29.91 swim. Cameron Helm was 4th and Tiffany Farfan 5th. For the boys, Johnny Ellery won the 11-14 year old 400 free with a fast 4:17.50 time. Ty Collins was 5th, Tanner Olson 6th and Adam Osowski was 7th. Day 3 of the JAG meet is on Saturday where temperatures are due to soar past 100 degrees but the water will stay a cool 75. Out in Indianapolis, Abbey and Matt will do one more day’s work before heading home to start training for US Open.
