Day 2 started with the second part of the procedures, which was mentioned earlier in day one. Yesterday Atta Baafi went through the procedure of screening and blood test. Also the family of Francis Atta were asked to donate extra blood, which will be needed for the operation later on. A new astray was captured as we received the previous x-rays later in the afternoon. The surgeons again came in for an inspection on Atta in the afternoon to see how the medicines that were given to him earlier on were responding. Their report about his health was positive and they commented that he was very fit even in his critical condition. During the inspection, the group of surgeons studied the new and old x-trays, which gave them a more clearer view on how the surgery will be carried out. After the inspection the doctor in charge of the surgery explained to us that they were set and ready to proceed on the operation, yet Atta still needs to undergo infusion feeding and medication. This procedure is being used to clean his intestines and to make sure that no food substance can be traced within his intestine before the operation on his oesophagus. The doctor also reported to us that Atta would have to stay at the hospital for at least 14 days after surgery for recovery. He is expected to swallow through his oesophagus between the 7th and 10th day after surgery to prove that the surgery was successful. Today, doctors will recheck on Atta again on how well the medicines are operating in his body. We will keep you updated. CWAF Team report; Korle Bu Hospital, Accra – Ghana Day 2
