Day 21 of being Thankful: Star Route A kids didnt go to proms or dances. Their gatherings where limited to church, basketball games, bridal or baby showers and going to the polls on voting day. Maw Maw and her fellow commissioners took pride in their roles in elections. Im not sure how the politics played out but it seemed to be a coveted job. They cooked for days and made it a treat. I think some people voted just so they could eat. The polls were set up in an old store and elections were the only time they opened the doors. Voting machines were brought in among the tables and chairs loaded with sweets to last all day. The children had their own voting machine. I always pulled the levers and left my vote. Election Day brought in the entire Star Route A community. Some folks would hangout till the polls closed. Another gathering that I found quite odd was thrown together when a man and woman tied the knot without including the community. I remember attending only one shivaree. Up and down star route After the sun went down, moms and dads loaded their kids along with pots and pans and assorted serving spoons. Some even brought guns and the occasional fire poppers. Stealthily to the newlyweds house they drove and assumed a safe position. Together they began to beat and bang the pots and pans, gun shots in the air and fire poppers lit up the night. It caused a big ruckus. The tradition called for the couple to serve cake and coffee. This particular event I attended didnt go as planned. The bride came out on the porch and cussed the entire clan. Needless to say they took home their pots and pans without congratulating the couple on their nuptials. Tonight I am thankful for old fashion traditions. We may not practice them anymore but they are part of our heritage.
