Day 23: It’s odd how many pastors there are that don’t enjoy working as a team. You’d think that if there is one area that would be focused on working together, it’d be ministry. Over the last 20 years or so, I’ve seen very few committed to it… and even fewer that have been willing to put themselves out there and take the risk when they’ve been hit before. That’s one of the things I respect deeply about Greg Salyer. He takes the risk and makes himself vulnerable, for the chance at being a part of a team that accomplishes something great. His willingness to partner shows me something about who he is… and it’s refreshing. Greg isn’t worried about his name. He’s not in the empire business. He’s not competing with the guy next door. He is driven by a desire - to make a difference, and that desire is more important than getting credit, being on the cover or being “the guy”. He just wants to live out his faith and encourage others to follow. That drive has had fallout, moments where he’s been taken advantage of or taken for granted. In the corporate world, that could be mistaken for weakness, but in the economy of God, that is a great strength. I know he’d rather rally people to care for the fatherless and the widows than crank out a flashy presentation for the weekend. He’d prefer to build a house for those in need than be asked to speak at the latest conference. He’d gladly step out of the spotlight for the chance to care for the broken. That’s what makes Greg such an incredible leader in my book. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to hang with Greg, serve with him at Discovery Pointe, and even assist with various ministry ideas that he has put together. There’s a reason I pick up the phone when he calls,… because I believe in him. I’m glad to call him a friend and look forward to the different ways we will team in the days ahead. #40friends40days
