Day 24: Tommy Lee Wallaces Halloween III: Season of the Witch - - TopicsExpress

Day 24: Tommy Lee Wallaces Halloween III: Season of the Witch - 1982 John Carpenters Halloween (1978) was the first movie I ever saw. Its a classic and deserves all of the respect and accolades it has ever received (even if Carpenter himself calls it his Argento movie). Halloween II is straight up 80s slasher conventions at their finest. People hate on Halloween III: Season of the Witch because Michael Myers isnt in it. I can see that complaint being valid up until about 1988 when he was brought back for Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, but that was a big letdown. 1989s Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers was even worse. 1995s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is a lot of fun and definitely my favorite of the Myers sequels just because it tries to be different and inject new life in to the series. Kevin Williamson still-birthed the turd that was Halloween H20 despite the return of Jamie Lee Curtis to the series. Even Busta Rhymes couldnt do anything with the mediocre Halloween: Resurrection. Rob Zombies movies dont count because they are reboots/sequels. Lets hypothesize that Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers was actually Halloween III. People more than likely still would have thought it was a stinker even though Myers basically picked up where he left off. The fact is this, after Halloween II, the Myers-oriented Halloween movies pretty much sucked. Its not Halloween III: The Season of the Witch fault. GET OVER IT and appreciate the movie for what it is. Tom Atkins wears his mustache proudly in this flick as a doctor who traces a mystery involving Silver Shamrock Halloween masks back to the town of Santa Mira, CA with the help of some random hot chick he picks up at a bar. Strange things are afoot, robot dudes go apey and kill interlopers, a rock from Stonehenge goes missing, and its all traced back to an evil Irish pagan who plans to bring back the true spirit of Samhain via a mass virgin sacrifice on Halloween night. Awesome. Every year around this time I vehemently defend Halloween III: Season of the Witch as my favorite film in the entire Halloween series and I get a bunch of pals who think Im an idiot (like Mike Vinikour, Ríkharður Gawellsson, etc.) because Myers isnt in it. As I stated above, every Halloween sequel with Myers in it past part two sucked (though I love me some part 6). Make part four part three and the result is still the same. At least Director John Carpenter, Debra Hill, and Tommy Lee Wallace had the guts to not only do something totally different with the series, but make a genuinely amazing little movie all in its own. Its one of my favorite horror flicks of all time and it has the catchiest jingle this side of Empire Carpet. Just try to get it out of your head...
