Day 27: One can accomplish a little, but two or more can accomplish more than any one man could dream of. Today I got to work in an atmosphere with multiple variables which made things intriguingly dynamic. The challenges I faced today consisted of implementing a process improvement project while concurrently working around the maintained production with 2 full time project staffed team members and others coming and going to give a hand while they could, in order to sort and move a plethora of material while not hindering production. This needed to be done in order to turn our shelves 90° from their previous locations, and thus open up 4 aisle passage ways compared to the previous 1 we had which was creating a bottleneck for forklift and on foot traffic flow. This will allow greater mobility between aisles and thus less conveyance and waiting waste. In addition we were able to pull additional obsolete inventory which will be recycled to recoup some of the cost of goods sold that have gone into them. Ill need to run a parreto analysis on the pulled matetial though to get the 20/80 pieces out and put back in to stock. In the mean time well be creating standardised shelf space, so that everything has a home which will make it easier to find when sales gives quotes to our customers and passes on a material order for fab to pull from stock--I.e. A shelf address. In addition, well need to begin decreasing our batch sizes which will limit the material going to stock, and what goes to stock will be given the opportunity to be refabricated if the order calls for it, despite the cost of the shavings removed from the piece of inventory. Because a 3% profit margin is still a profit margin and gets compounded on the other margins going out the door with minimal lead time.
