Day #3 --- sorry for no update yesterday, but we were in a remote rural area of Nica known as Nueva Guiana. This is the primary dairy area of the Country. Interesting fact --- the farmers need daily milk sales to survive (cash flow), but make more money from beef production also. Thus, all cows are dual purpose and cross bred --- Jersey & Brahma --- the weirdest mix I have ever seen, but it works for them! It was a 5 hr drive to this region - I was picked up at 6am by my new best friend (and translator) Scarleth Navarro and accompanied my Gringo counterpart Mr Daniel. It was a long and tedious drive, but the countryside was beautiful! When my eyes werent closed from near miss head-on collisions with buses, trucks, cars, motorcycles and COWS, I was able to ask many question about all the foreign sites in my view. Not to worry, Ms Scarleth is an excellent driver and we were in good hands all the way! We stopped at a roadside restaurant for a traditional breakfast - pico gallo, huevos, ceuso, salsa and tortillas --- it is my new favorite! We continued on our way till we reached our destination and met our hosts - a small dairy cooperative. We were graciously welcomed and got right to work. Competition has been cutting into their profits and coop membership was beginning to dwindle - they needed help fast! Oue solution was simple - stabilize the membership, establish themselves as the true & only farmer owned co-op and establish market dominance in the region. After those goals were completed, then we built a long range plan of goals that expanded markets, including exports and grower incentives for quality. Thank goodness for Mr Daniel, a strategic planner and fluent in Spanish and Ms Scarleth --- they kept this Gringo in the loop! Mission accomplished! After more countryside tours, we found a very rustic hotel for the night! LOL No AC or hot water, but who cares? Its 80 degrees - 80% humidity at 9pm - its how we roll --- NICA style! ;)
