Day 3: It is always heavenly starting the day off with Mass, to get a boost of vitamin C Christ ... Then we were briefed on our day. We were told we would be visiting the homeless that were taking in by the Missionaries of the poor. On the way to the apostolate. I had mixed emotions of joy and sadness, as were you going to visit the orphanage of men, women and children who were abandoned by families. Before arriving there was an overpowering smell Ive never experienced before, realising we were coming up a mountain, not a mountain from God but a mountain of rubbish. We were passing a rubbish dump. But what was most shocking, was that people had built their homes in and around these dump sights. We asked why people would live so close to this inhuman environment ? We were told that these rubbish dumps were their source of nutrition and survival and without the rubbish they will starve to death. The poor depend on our garbage. To hear this, truly saddens me.. As what we put for trash, is seen to them as treasure. What we cant finish and throw out, could feed a family. We fill our stomachs while we empty our hearts. Arriving at the apostolate we were greeted by the women, some ran to give us hugs, others were yelling hello with excitement. One lady called Kim couldnt stop waving and telling us Merry Christmas. The joy and happiness they gave us was so consoling and real, that I felt surrounded by Christs love. The children were amazing what I noticed is that these Children might have a physical deformity, but their hearts and smiles are in the right place. Romar become my best friend and introduced me to his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. I was not sadden by what I saw today, but filled with joy as everyone we met greeted us with a smile. As a smile is still the same whether your rich or poor. The Joy of Christ is what Christ is about.
