Day 3 Reports from Newcastle: Netball A morning visit to the Team UTS netballers was just as successful as we have come to expect from the club. Both the mixed and women’s team have kept a three year winning streak well in tact by finishing their round games undefeated, with the most amazing score margins: overall the women only conceded 30 goals against them whilst scoring over 200 in 4 games, mixed conceding 60 to their 300 scored. Both finished at the top of their pools, and have high hopes coming into the finals. The mixed team will play hometown rivals UNSW, who came second in their round games, in the morning tomorrow and women’s will play the University of Newcastle, who have also been undefeated all tournament. A win for both teams in these matches will see them play in the gold medal match later in the day. The netballers seemed relaxed courtside today, comfortable in their so far astonishing defeats throughout the week, hopefully this attitude doesn’t hinder their fighting spirit as they come into some tough matches tomorrow. Oz Tag Oz Tag has grown each year to become a very strong club for UTS. With players from dominant Sydney representative teams the Warriors and the Homebush Titans, as well as veterans from Ryde and the Central Coast, both our mixed and men’s teams are a formidable force at this years University Games. The men were undefeated until they faced the strong University of Wollongong team, which Ryde player Aaron Chan has had earmarked as their biggest competition all week. This saw the boys take 2nd place in their pool, giving them the chance to play Macquarie University again tomorrow, hopefully repeating their 7-6 win over them today. A win will see them into the gold medal match. The mixed team also suffered their only loss of the tournament so far to the University of Wollongong, going down in a nail-biting finish 11-10. They also finished 2nd in their pool, and the team this morning was looking forward to playing their biggest competition from the other pool, ACPE, the University of Newcastle and Macquarie University. They sorely went down to Macquarie University this afternoon 10-5, so tomorrow will play the University of Sydney’s Cumberland campus, who went down in their last match against powerhouse the University of Newcastle 39-0. A win tomorrow will see them play for 5th place in the competition. Touch Football The touch football club suffered large amounts of last minute drop outs in their men’s and women’s teams this year, putting in the balance their chances of success. All three teams have overcome this setback to show why the Touch Club is one of the largest and one of the most successful clubs at the University. The mixed team, as is traditional at the Eastern University games, contains UTS’s star touch football players, most of who play at a state or national level. They finished their round games today at the top of the table, remaining undefeated for the 3rd year in a row, thanks to star veteran players Corey Voura, Ben Coulthurst, Georgia Clifton, Katie Harrison and the president of the club, Madalitso Masache. They advanced to the quarterfinals and smashed our hometown rivals UNSW 6-2 with relative ease, and will play Otago University, who they only defeated 4-3 in the round games, in a game that will decide who goes into the gold medal match. Special recognition goes to Andrea Roditis, who played for UTS Women’s Basketball this morning between touch football games, showing the versatility and endurance of UTS athletes. The men have tackled their recruitment problem head on to come out of the round games with vigour. They have played 7 games, winning 2, losing 4 and finishing one in a draw 1, putting them at 5th position as their pool games concluded today. They will play Charles Sturt University tomorrow in their elimination rounds, in gaining this win the boys will play for 9th place in the competition. Veteran players Matt Costello and Marcus Hoon are confident in their chances of a win tomorrow against Charles Sturt. The Club has once again enlisted star coach Kim Solman from North Sydney Touch Football Club to coach the women for the competition, a good choice by the club as it allow her to train up the large number of new UTS players that have joined the team, and bring new talented players up through the ranks to ensure the Touch Clubs reign of dominance remains in tact. The girls unfortunately lost 5 of their 6 round games to finish at 6th place in their pool. They will play Macquarie University tomorrow morning, followed by the Australian National University, to determine their final place in the competition.
