Day 3 Snapshot of Alzheimers Association International Conference #AAIC2014 : Theme: Alzheimer’s and dementia as a global problem. While many researchers agree, the global epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease will continue to grow (due to an ageing population), there is evidence in the US and Europe that prevention programs may be lowering the incidence (i.e. the number of new cases). For example, in Germany, dementia prevalence in 2009 was 3.6 per cent lower than in 2007 and 1.8 per cent lower than in 2008. Research suggests that the main attributable factors to this might be due to higher levels of education and more aggressive treatment of cardiovascular disease. This is a good time to remind you to take a look at Australia’s Your Brain Matters risk reduction program – yourbrainmatters.org.au – for advice in this area. The incidence and prevalence of dementia in developing countries was also discussed. It is suggested that in countries such as Colombia, and large regions of Asia and Africa, dementia is severely underreported. For example, in Colombia they are suggesting it is underreported by as much as 50 %. Researchers also raised questions about the effects of the growing incidence of obesity and diabetes in developed countries, both of which are associated with increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. youtube/watch?v=5a7oz8mLWLE
