Day 3 of Reptile Awareness Week is Wet-Reptile-Wednesday! Today - TopicsExpress

Day 3 of Reptile Awareness Week is Wet-Reptile-Wednesday! Today we celebrate some of our favorite aquatic reptiles, such as our crocodiles, alligators, & caimans. Many of them are getting ready for Gators & Ghouls, and 1 in particular is getting dolled up for the occasion. Baby, one of our American Alligators, got a bath at Paul Hortons Pay It Forward Car Wash Fundraiser Event last night, along with her buddy, Rowdy the Asian Water Monitor. As you can see, Rowdy was cleaned very thoroughly and Baby was waiting patiently for her ride back to PHS after her bath (dont worry, we were parked waiting for Rowdy in this picture!). Did you know that American Alligators, which are native to the Southeastern United States, used to be an endangered species? They faced extinction due to poaching and habitat destruction, but are now thriving in great numbers. They are an excellent example of an apex predator (the top dog in their swamp), with their extremely strong jaws, 80 regenerating teeth (yes, they can grow them back if they break!), powerful & muscular tails, and armored scales (called osteoderms) across the top side of their body. They are excellent swimmers and thrive in aquatic environments, which is why we decided to highlight them on Wet-Reptile-Wednesday!
