Day 3 of posting about my musical DNA for Kay Dougherty. Backing up a few years for this one... the back story: my east coast grandparents were from the cocktail generation and straight off the set of Mad Men, about as different as people could be from my family or people I grew up with. When I was born, they began spending part of their year in Utah, built a house they christened the Villa Lara, and bought a giant organ (the kind they used to sell in malls, with all the effects and samba beats on various buttons) for the living room, on which my grandpa taught himself to play one song, the only song hed ever play on that thing, which he played for us after every Sunday dinner through most of my childhood. Ill admit, I never really got tired of hearing it. This song represents a lot of things; of course, my namesake, something I didnt really understand as a kid, but feel a lot more empathy, equity and interest in now. Also, all the showtunes and Judy Collins and other musical influences from my family, which I rediscovered later in life at the tabletop juke boxes in Bill & Nadas. A kind of sad passionate baggage that people today would probably not put on a kid, but looking back, I wouldnt change it.
