Day 30 of Thirty-one Days of Christmas Alex Chilton was one of those rare musicians whose influence outweighed his fame. First heard singing lead on the Box Tops’ 1967 hit ‘The Letter,’ Chilton later quit to form a power pop band, Big Star, in 1971. Although the band had little commercial success and broke up by 1974, Big Star became after-the-fact underground legends, and their sound was a huge influence on many bands in the 1980s & ‘90s alternative rock scene, including Georgia’s REM. Chilton died of a heart attack in 2010, after which members of Big Star joined with various stars to commemorate him. Here is what’s left of Big Star performing a Chilton composition ‘Jesus Christ (Was Born Today),’ with REM’s Mike Mills taking on Chilton’s lead singing role - performed at a 2010 Chilton tribute in Memphis, at the Levitt Shell. One more bit of rock history trivia: these guys are playing on the same stage that hosted the first live public performance by a 19-year-old kid named Elvis Presley.
