Day 4 2015: One of my most challenging yet simple personal goals: This year Ill concentrate on listening, and mantener la boca cerrada. My Parents, RUN-DMC, Shut Up and Listen “Most conversations are simply monologues delivered in the presence of a witness.” - Margaret Millar Behaviorist and Neuroscientist estimate that 80% of our daily behavior is pure habit. One of more our interesting habit is listening. Usually, we never quite listen! My parents would say I know you hear me, but are you listening? We know from scientific research that we often hear someone, but are not actually listening to him or her. This is true in every endeavor and relationship. So we have mastered, I didnt know what you meant ... I mustve misunderstood ... I thought you said ... You didnt say that ... If you couldve said it more clearly... well next time make it less complicated. Do we talk Too Much? Indeed we do. Most conversation is a 70-30% exchange. psychologytoday/blog/your-personal-renaissance/201204/do-we-talk-too-much-0. In a WSJ article we find that most of us want to get the last and the most words into our conversations. But Dr. Lynn Koegel, who is clinical director of Koegel Autism Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, says that an optimal conversation flow has each person talking about 50% of the time. This is the Ali-Frazier of good give-and-take. wsj/articles/SB10001424052702303722604579111220890756120 So as individuals, families, and nations, we need to listen more and talk a lot less. Listening to noise will not bring peace or understanding into our families, communities, nation, or abroad. The lyrics to Boy You Talk Too Much by RUN-DMC You talk too much Then you never shut up I said, You talk too much Homeboy you never shut up A big blabbermouth, thats what you are If you were a talk show host, youd be a star I said your mouth is big, size extra large And when you open it, its like my garage “Theres a lot of difference between listening and hearing.” ― G.K.
