Day 4: Often, when I dream, I find myself walking in a field where the grass is so tall that I am hidden inside of it. My brother is always there with me and he chases me out onto a dirt road where across the street I can see my Grandma Ivey sweeping her porch and yelling at us to get out of the dirt road. Off to the side of the white house, my Grandpa Ivey is tilling his massive garden. In the middle of the yard lies a huge oak tree and rope swing that he tied up for me. I would spend hours out there on that swing as a child. My Grandma would make us take 2 baths a day and she taught me to be clean as best as she could. I swear she followed me around with a trash container and hand wipes within reach at all times. She also knew my love for McDonalds and would take us out to eat there at least once every weekend we stayed with her. And Ice Cream afterward. Between her and my mother, I owned every Star Wars toy I ever wanted as a child, and even way back then, I was a slave to my imagination and story telling. Many a battle was fought inside of her house where the middle of her coffee table or some of her antique stands were turned into Rebel battle stations or Death Star platforms. She has been gone for quite some time now but not a day passes that I dont miss her. She married one man in her life and never loved another. She never quite knew how to move on after my Grandpa passed away. In that regard, her and I are exactly the same. Once we truly love someone, it is forever and we are fiercely loyal. Not a trait so much learned as it is inherited. I am thankful for her and the values she taught me when I was little. She was there when my mother couldnt be due to work or personal issues. We used to all gather at her table every morning for breakfast that she would awaken at 5 A.M. to start cooking for her family. The smell of it would just get you out of bed and running to the kitchen. We also gathered at her house every Thanksgiving and Christmas for a huge spread of food and always...I mean always...a bowl of mac and cheese made just for me at the table. I miss you Grandma. I love you and am thankful for her having been a big part of my life today.
