Day 4 of Ross Robinsons Significant Songs in Your Life Music Challenge. Something More Beside You - Cowboy Junkies Anyone who has been following my posts will probably come to the conclusion that if it isnt a progressive form of music, I probably wont become obsessed with it. Having covered progressive, pop (Beatles), rock (Pink Floyd) and metal (Tool) we now arrive at progressive Country and the best progressive country band I found around about the same time I discovered Tool (circa 1996-7), was the Cowboy Junkies. Like Tool I had heard of them but I wasnt all that taken with the idea of leaving my comfort zone. For a long time I thought they were American, mainly because I thought I detected a Southern twang to the lead singers voice, but it turn out its a slight affectation brought upon by listening to country music as a youngster. Theyre Canadians from Canadia(sic), or more specifically Toronno (which is apparently how you pronounce Toronto if youre from Toronto. Not a problem for any Aussie I know) Anyway this, like most of their songs, is a love song about co-dependence. Actually a large portion of their other songs are either Neil Young or Lou Reed covers, but once theyre done by the Cowboy junkies, they are done. This song however made a painful break-up all that much easier. I still cant work out why, as its a haunting ballad, made all the more haunting by the distant distorted guitar, close-up bass and Margo Timmins droop-all-over-the-microphone vocals Something More Besides You One foot stands before the crib The other by the casket A question formed upon stilled lips Is passed on but never asked I guess I believe that theres a point To what we do But I ask myself is there Something more besides you?
