Day 4 of a tour of India through the eyes of my hero and heroine. Delhi was hot and steamy (and no a/c). The British women, or memsahibs, as they were called, insisted on sticking to their heavy garments. Can you imagine how titillating the scant saris were to the stuffy Brits? My heroine and her sister wore saris when indoors and w/o company. The first photos is of a beautiful gown they might wear when entertaining, but there would have been at least 7 layers beneath, including a tight corset, while the photo on the right shows the scant 3 pieces the natives, and my heroine wore. The cropped top is called a choli, the skirt a lehenga, and the filmy silk fabric draped over it is the sari. Which would you rather have worn in a hot, sultry humid country with no air conditioning?
