Day 44 - Finally back in Hong Kong after 3 weeks in Toronto and New York. Severely jet-lagged but it feels great to be back!! In the November issue of 《City Magazine 號外》, there is an interview of me discussing the power of social media, fueling movements like the ice bucket challenge and the Umbrella Revolution at the speed of light. And in the Sunday (9 Nov) issue of 《The Apple Daily 蘋果日報》, there is a full-page comparison between the property cartel in Hong Kong and the Monopoly board game, based on a phone interview I did two weeks ago. I argue, among other things, that a Monopoly game is only fun at the beginning when all players have an equal shot. The game gets dull after an hour or so, when players who hold most of the deeds will completely dominate the game, while the rest of the players keep going around the board and making the dominant players richer -- which is exactly the current economic reality in Hong Kong. Citizens are increasingly realizing that they are forever stuck in the late stage of a Monopoly game. This intense sense of frustration, and indeed boredom, is what fuels the Umbrella Revolution.
