Day 5. Respect for actors is a way of life at Ten Chimneys. ―David Hyde Pierce David Hyde Pierce took the stage tonight for a conversation with the community about his life (his early aspirations as a concert pianist), his work and his experience here. He talked about his relationship with Uta Hagen, one of the greatest actresses and acting teachers of the 20th century. She is the author of Respect for Acting, and was a frequent guest of the Lunts here at Ten Chimneys. As I listened (which was hard at times because I was stabbing myself on the inside for not bringing my journal), I remembered a moment from the first day. After the actors each talked about the path that brought us to this master class and our hopes/expectations for the week, David remarked that I was confident. And he said it again. And then a third time. On the next break, we were waiting in line for the bathroom and I touched his arm. David, you keep saying that Im confident. I dont see myself that way. He said, You neednt. And perhaps that isnt the right word. Self-knowledge might be more accurate. Ok, I said. And I found peace in that because I know this much … that when I say the key of F for Forrest it is because my voice has resonance when I speak/sing the truth, and my heart has fear when I dont. And that fear has been my compass during my 20+ years of getting to know you, getting to know all about YOU. I hope to share YOU with the world. Global.
