Day 526 Leonitis - This picture is from the day Leo and Lakota came to stay with us. I love this picture. Lakota was trying to let Leo know it was going to be fine and that she was right there. Lakota was such a good mom. Shes doing fine in her home. We continue to get updates from time to time but havent had any pictures to share recently but all is well as they say, no news is good news! Today was beautiful, highs in the 50s. We were unfortunately short handed today so while the dogs did get out as usual to play, we didnt get as much one on one time with them as we would have liked. I know a wonderful volunteer came and spent quite a bit of time with Zoe today in the lobby so she got a little extra TLC today. I know I have talked to you about our favorite Mastiff girl Karita before and shared the story of her not so great past and have shared current pictures of her. What I havent ever done is shared photos of Karita when she first came into rescue. Its one thing to tell you her sad story and have you look at the picture of the happy healthy dog she is now, it holds a different impact when you see the reality of her past. Im going to warn you the pictures are graphic. Im not posting them for shock value, Im posting them because they are the reality of what Karitas life was before coming into rescue. We unfortunately see this over and over in rescue and something has to be done to stop animal cruelty and neglect. It is obvious that the laws are not going to change any time in the future unfortunately as many people have been trying for years to make change with little or no success. Change is going to have to come from us as a society through education and doing a better job of teaching our children the importance of being kind to not only each other but to all the living creatures on this earth. Somewhere as a society we took a left turn and wandered off down the wrong path and now we need to get back on the right road again and put a stop to this. Ok...Im hopping off my soap box now......got it off my chest. Here is Karitas story again to refresh your memory. Karita is a 4 year old English Mastiff. She was actually an owner surrender into rescue because the owner couldnt afford to take care of her. She came into rescue 80lbs underweight and with a raging case of sarcoptic mange. She also had horrible eye infections and open sores from scratching so much. She was almost bald because of the mange. She had also apparently been used as target practice, as she has a number of BBs embedded in her skin. Due to bad breeding and malnutrition Karita is a special needs dogs as she has hip displasia in both hips and and needs TPLO surgery (tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy) on both knees. She gets around fine now but will have a harder time with this as she ages. It was a long road to recovery for Karita. With her past she could have decided humans were not worth her time but instead shes as sweet as she can be and an absolute favorite with all of the volunteers when she comes to stay with us. Karita is in a foster home but does spend quite a bit of time with us as well. Karita is not a PAWS dog, she belongs to an out of State rescue but is being fostered here in the Kansas City area. If you are interested in giving Karita a loving home, you can contact us and we will put you in touch with her foster mom. She really is an amazing girl with an amazing story of perseverance and she deserves a home of her own. Karita is exactly what rescue is all about. Making a difference in an animals life. A little love and some TLC (and a good Vet) is all you need! I know Karita believes this to be true! More tomorrow!
