Day 53, In Retrospect on Brazil: Over a cup of coffee he tells me - TopicsExpress

Day 53, In Retrospect on Brazil: Over a cup of coffee he tells me how he studied theater in Russia for four years, and how he’s now directing a touring Chekhov play in Brazilian Portuguese with a famous soap opera star as the main female lead. At the same time, his English is so good I wonder if maybe he’s studied in London or somewhere else. Something about him feels elusive. Later on I met another guy who was born in Rio De Janeiro but moved to 19 months ago after transferring from his job at Facebook in New York City, where he had lived for 16 years. The first night we met at his apartment, drinking a glass of Malbec, he told me how he would soon be going on a two week vacation to Morocco. He reminds me of friends I’ve met before in San Francisco. At the same time, I find bits of myself in these movements. Pieces that don’t necessarily seem to make sense together but nevertheless feel natural. When I first came to Sao Paulo, I always tried to emphasize difference, difference and more difference. But the interactions with these two men changed that perception. Yes, I might have gotten to see both men naked and steal more than a few kisses. But it was their unraveling lives and distant treks that made me realize these imprecise, seemingly unnatural combinations.
